Honey bee-collected pollen richness and protein content across an agricultural land-use gradient

چکیده
Higher protein content and greater taxonomic richness of pollen have been noted as beneficial for bee health, but the relationship between well how varies across landscape gradients remain understudied. We assessed correlations plant species composition in collected from honey colonies three states over 2 years. selected sites along an agricultural-grassland gradient to investigate varied with land-use. observed a weak, negative richness, although we found no evidence relationships land-use either or composition. Results suggest that by bees can, albeit weakly, correlate agroecosystems Upper Midwest, some systems, land use may minimal influence on bees.

A Comparison of Honey Bee-Collected Pollen From Working Agricultural Lands Using Light Microscopy and ITS Metabarcoding.
Taxonomic identification of pollen has historically been accomplished via light microscopy but requires specialized knowledge and reference collections, particularly when identification to lower taxonomic levels is necessary. Recently, next-generation sequencing technology has been used as a cost-effective alternative for identifying bee-collected pollen; however, this novel approach has not be...
متن کاملPyrrolizidine alkaloids in honey and bee pollen.
A total of 3917 honey samples and 119 'bee pollen' samples (pollen collected by honeybees) were analysed for pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). Some 0.05 M sulphuric acid was used for extraction followed by a clean-up step by means of solid-phase extraction. Separation and detection was achieved by target analysis using an LC-MS/MS system. PAs were found in 66% of the raw honeys (bulk honey not yet...
متن کاملNutritional aspects of honey bee-collected pollen and constraints on colony development in the eastern Mediterranean.
Pollen is the main protein and lipid source for honey bees (Apis mellifera), and nutritionally impoverished landscapes pose a threat to colony development. To determine colony nutritional demands, we analyzed a yearly cycle of bee-collected pollen from colonies in the field and compared it to colony worker production and honey bee body composition, for the first time in social insects. We monit...
متن کاملHoney bee‐collected pollen in agro‐ecosystems reveals diet diversity, diet quality, and pesticide exposure
European honey bees Apis mellifera are important commercial pollinators that have suffered greater than normal overwintering losses since 2007 in North America and Europe. Contributing factors likely include a combination of parasites, pesticides, and poor nutrition. We examined diet diversity, diet nutritional quality, and pesticides in honey bee-collected pollen from commercial colonies in th...
متن کاملCarnivore Use of Avocado Orchards across an Agricultural-Wildland Gradient
Wide-ranging species cannot persist in reserves alone. Consequently, there is growing interest in the conservation value of agricultural lands that separate or buffer natural areas. The value of agricultural lands for wildlife habitat and connectivity varies as a function of the crop type and landscape context, and quantifying these differences will improve our ability to manage these lands mor...
